What they're saying, August

We were noticing tonight how Willow pronounces the "L" sound. She can't say her own name properly, it comes out "Wiwwow", and if a word starts with L she skips that sound - like "ittle amb". So we can hear the L sound at the end of little, but not the beginning. And a word like sleep, she pronounces "seep". This is the last quirky talking thing I think, she's even corrected her pronouns!

Oh! She's just started saying not yet, "net net". Its adorable- that's just how she thinks the word is pronounced.

She's expressing her imagination and sense of humour more and more now. She tells little jokes that she thinks are hilarious, and tells me stories she makes up. Lately shes been talking about being scared a lot. It's hard to tell where she got this from, we never talk about being scared. Now she is scared of thunder, other kids at playgroup, and when the car goes over small hills. It tickles her tummy and she doesn't like it- she cries and screams that she's scared. Makes driving anywhere a bit stressful.

Toby is talking up a storm! No real words yet of course, but lots of sounds. His favorite lately is "dat" or "zhah". New sounds like "th", "ssss", "brrrr", "v". He is very chatty, making noise as he crawls around getting into things, "zhah, zhah, zhah". At playgroup today he was playing with a year old little boy and everytime he looked at Toby, Toby would laugh. This throaty "ah-hah!" type laugh that makes everyone laugh. His laugh and smile are so contagious, and he uses it to get attention. I think he's using "mama" for me now, but it's still hard to tell. If he's whiny and crawls to me he'll be saying "mama, mum, mum, mum....".

He's starting to cry and get mad when things don't go his way. This is the first time I've seen this from Toby, he's such an easy going guy. He's fighting naps and will cry and throw himself around when I take him into his room. This evening he kept going in the bathroom so I closed the door. He would race to the bathroom and realize the door was shut- and just wail! I had to laugh.

The Fair!

A couple of weeks back we spent the day at the fair. Toby was in the baby show, and Willow entered 3 pieces in the craft show (which we later forgot to pick up before the deadline. We realized 1/2 hour late and James raced there, but the doors were locked. Oh, the guilt!). We spent a lot of time watching the farm animals. Willow had a bit of a breakdown when I told her she couldn't go on the merry-go-round- I couldn't figure out the logistics of that, with the 2 of them- I'm not even sure she was big enough to ride it. It didn't help that it was nap time. Was fun all the same.

Toby and I, on stage. Baby on the right was the winner. Funny, I sat beside the
winner when I entered Willow 2 years ago.

Me & my kids! Thank god for friends with cameras! There are so few
photos of me and the two of them.

I still don't get it- how could this face not WIN?

Willow, checking out the animals.

Willow's favorite animals.

Good times with good friends.

9 months!

Happy nine months sweet boy, T-man, mister, dude, Tobe, Ober, Toby. We're so glad you're here!

Having seen it twice now, I still can't believe how much these beings change in such a short time! Toby has been here as long as I carried him. He has gained 14 lbs, 8 inches in length and 10 cm in head circumference. (For those who have lost track, that means at 9 months he is 22 3/4 lbs, 29.5" tall and has a 48cm head.) Even more impressive, he has learned to smile, laugh, recognize faces, lift his head, roll over, sit up, make noise, stand up, crawl, and walk while supported.

Toby is really easy going. He likes to be held, to people watch, is chatty, smiles easily and loves his sister. He is a mama's boy, enjoys splashing, the outdoors, naps in the car and sucking his thumb. His favorite toys are ones that make noise, cars, balls and blankets. He likes peek-a-boo, chasing Willow and standing up.

He doesn't like loud, unexpected noises. Or when his sister cries (it makes him cry too). He doesn't like to be looked at or spoken to the wrong way. If we leave him alone in a room he howls- he likes to be with us.

Toby's eyes are almost brown (but still have a bit of greyish-greenish-blue look to them around the outside), hair is light sandy brown and has an amazing complexion. Tooth #6 is making it's way - soon there will be 4 on the top and two on the bottom. He still drools a lot, especially when teething. He is perfectly chubby and slowly losing his giant cheeks.

He sleeps through the night occasionally, lately up around 2-3am for a snack. He sleeps in his crib at night, but mama's bed for naps.

Green things do not make their way into Toby's mouth. He will eat cat fur, dirt, sticks and shoes, but not touch broccoli, green beans, peas, or asparagus. It's so cute how he turns his nose up in disgust! He loves his orange food though- squash, sweet potato, carrots are his favorites. Also at the top of the list are peaches, pears, cherries, berries and meat.

When the camera comes out, Toby's mouth opens wide. At every photo session I get several of these shots. Here are a bunch, just for fun.

Siblings

OK, so there is something sweeter than a baby learning to crawl. It's sibling love. Our house is full of sibling love. Toby watches and learns from his sister. He is always ready with a smile when she looks at him, and a laugh when she's working for one. Willow, a bit bossy, is always ready to show Toby her world. She lets him follow her around, telling him about different things around the house.

In the last couple of weeks the two of them have been playing together. It's great for them, and me too! I can actually get something cleaned, or some food prepared, uninterrupted. And when I peek on them playing in Willow's room my heart melts.

Video- Toby Crawling

Is there anything sweeter than a baby learning to crawl?

I've been working on this video awhile..... a whole month. Between realizing our camera is not mac compatible, and then finding out how to upload our files, upgrading to imovie 11 and trying to figure out how to use it.... well, here we are. I'm having trouble figuring out the new imovie, so I kinda gave up half way. But the final product kind of works, with the music ending and the super cute 'haha'.

So, Toby's been crawling for over a month now and he's a pro. Secret tunnels under the furniture and all. Keeping up with his big sis.

Love.

Camping

Just got back from a 24 hour camping trip with the kids! Everyone thinks we're crazy, but it was a lot of fun. A lot of work, yes, but I wanted to do it because I knew how much Willow would love it, and it's something James & I enjoy but haven't done since before Willow was born. It was great to prove that we could do it. We were supposed to stay for 2 nights but my air mattress had a leak.... and with Toby sleeping on it with me it wasn't very safe.

I didn't get many photos of Willow being still. She just ran around
the camp site the entire time!

The provincial park wasn't that great. We picked it based on the weather- it was supposed to rain that night at the park we had originally chosen so we went west instead of east, where the storm had already passed.

Loving the tent.

Toby having a good nap.

Willow didn't stop running. Unless she was jumping in the tent. Toby loved the tent; he crawled around, bouncing on the mattresses like it was the greatest thing. He likes being outside but didn't want to be put down. I don't know if it's the separation anxiety, or just being in a new place or what it was. They both slept alright. As good as at home, Willow up twice and Toby up 3 or 4 times.

Toby and Dad chilling by the fire.

Once again, no photos of me. I guess thats what I get for being the photographer!

28 months

Willow is 28 months old, 2 1/3 years old, 2.3333 years old.

Her manners are impressive for a 2 year old. She says please and thank you for everything, and "Yes Mom!" or "OK mom!". She still throws a tantrum here and there, but mostly she's just a joy to be around.

Loves the slide!

Bed and nap time are a breeze lately- especially since 'mo-mo' has been sleeping during the day. Willow is so excited and happy to be reunited with Mo-mo that she loves going to bed. As I leave her rooms she squeals "Love you Mom! See you when I wake up!". It makes up for the years of bed-time battles. There is usually still one or two wakeups during the night, usually for a drink of water. We've tried giving her a full sippy cup for her dolly to hold until she's thirsty- but she drinks it all right away. She's been giving signs of readiness to nighttime potty train. Sometimes she'll get up soon after going to bed to pee, and usually runs from her room in the morning right to the washroom. She is dry 90% of the time after naps, and about half the time in the morning.

Willow watches kids at the fair, instead of the animals.

Not so sure about the pigs. Lately she crosses her arms in her shy defensive stance.

I hope her shyness eases up soon. She loves being out, especially around other kids but she is too frightened to play with them. After an hour or so she ventures out a bit but usually plays by herself. She is quite observant and knows what is happening with everyone all the time. The other day at the chiropractor she took a boys car (I had no idea, I thought it was an office toy). She played with it for awhile, until the boy was leaving. She grabbed my hand and ran after him to give it back. She was super shy and wouldn't even look at him as she held the car out, but I was impressed with her gesture as well as her awareness that it was his.

Keeping an eye on the other kids as she finger paints at Playgroup.

Watching the kids play at her cousins birthday party.

Willow's favorite toys lately are arts and crafts. She loves her water colour paints. She colours, paints with water and loves play doh. She just got some construction paper with scissors and glue and spent all morning cutting paper into small bits. She also loves the sand box, helping me garden and digging in dirt. I love that she loves getting dirty outside but also twirls when she has a pretty skirt on. She's girly by nature, but isn't afraid to get dirty to have fun.

OK readers, Follow my site! Or leave me a comment here so I know who's reading my blog. I checked my stats for the first time and I can't believe it's been viewed 555 times! I've had readers in 4 countries. I'm sure this is less than extraordinary, but I'm still impressed!

Dear Toby (The vacuum)

Dear Toby,

The following is a list of things I fished out of your mouth today: a clump of cat hair, a tissue, play-doh, a piece of colouring book, 2 cheerios, a leaf, a bug, and the little cap that covers the toilet bolts. Yum. You are such a little vacuum, just like Willow was! If there is a crumb, or a piece of fluff on the floor you will find it- and eat it.

I like when you keep me company when I'm in the kitchen cooking..... even though I know all you want are the bits I'm likely to drop.

Love Mumumumum
